MELBOURNE, Jan 3 AAP - A 21-year-old man has had his car impounded for the third time after he was caught speeding in Melbourne's east.

Police intercepted the man's car doing 176km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Princes Highway at Clayton about 12.30am (AEDT) on Saturday.

The driver from Clayton will be charged on summons with dangerous driving and speeding offences and he faces the possibility of having his car impounded permanently.

Police also caught a P-plater speeding at 170km/h on the Hume Freeway, near the northern Victorian town of Benalla, on Friday.

This was during a police crackdown on holiday drivers using the freeway, which is the main road between Melbourne and Sydney.

Police did not impound his car because it was a hire vehicle.

The crackdown also caught a German tourist, who was travelling at 145km/h on the freeway in a campervan as he hurried to meet friends at the Murray River town of Yarrawonga.

Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable Mark Dewey said the behaviour of the motorists was "outrageous".

"There is absolutely no reason for anybody to be travelling at those kinds of speeds," he said.

"They are putting themselves and other road users at risk.

"At those speeds you can lose control of a vehicle in an instant and there is little chance of recovery."
